Safety Awareness Tip: Hotels and Motels

Winter break is here for Massachusetts public schools, and that means many families are going to be taking off for some well-deserved R&R at some distant locale.  The IFD wishes everyone a fun and relaxing time, but we also urge you to take a couple quick and easy steps to ensure you are ready in the event of an emergency where you are staying.

As you check out the facilities of your hotel or motel – the pool, restaurants and mini-bar – take time as well to look at the emergency evacuation map that every place of lodging posts in each room.  Familiarize yourself with the two paths of egress that map will provide.  Take a quick minute to discuss this with your family, and designate a spot outside the hotel where you will meet if you are separated in the event of an emergency.  Discussions like this are great opportunities to impress on your kids the importance of safety awareness and preparation.

Remember, we don’t stay prepared because we’re worried something bad will happen.  We prepare so we don’t have to worry.  Enjoy your vacation!
