IPSWICH — Chief Paul Nikas reports Ipswich Police located a 52-year-old Winchester man suffering from early signs of hypothermia this morning after conducting a search of the Crane Beach area.
Ipswich Police began the search at approximately 9:15 p.m. yesterday after the Ipswich Emergency Communications Center received an “open line” 911 call which was ultimately traced to the Crane Beach area.
Ipswich Police responded directly to the beach, which was gated and closed, and upon arrival found a motor vehicle parked in the gated parking lot. Officers traced the vehicle to a 52-year-old Winchester man.
After searching the beach, police found a number of personal belongings approximately a mile east of the parking lot.
Mutual aid agencies assisting in the search included Ipswich Fire, North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC), state police K-9s and the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing.
Around 12:30 a.m. this morning, the man was located by the air wing, approximately three miles east of the parking lot near the mouth of the Essex River.
Land units responded and determined the man had previously been in the water and was suffering from the early stages of hypothermia. He was brought to the parking lot where he received medical aid from Action Ambulance Paramedics and was transported by ambulance to Beverly Hospital for further medical evaluation.
