IPSWICH — Police Chief and Harbormaster Chief Paul Nikas wishes to share information on a virtual boating safety course in expectation of a busy summer season.
The Ipswich Harbormaster Department has seen a significant increase in new boating registrations and welcomes new boat owners to the area. Those new to boating are urged to take a safety course to ensure that everyone can enjoy the water this spring and summer safely.
The U.S. Coast Guard Boat America boating safety course provides individuals with the information they need to obtain a boat license or safety certification in numerous states, including Massachusetts.
The course will provide basic knowledge and a deepened understanding of boating law, safety equipment, navigation, hazards, trailering, storing, protecting the boat, hunting, fishing, water-skiing, river boating and general best practices, and will take place through a live and interactive virtual classroom.
The class is $55 per student and starts on Tuesday, May 4. The class will be held over the course of four Tuesdays: May 4, May 11, May 18 and May 25. Each class will be held from 6:30-9 p.m.

In 2017, the U.S. Coast Guard reports there were 4,291 boating incidents that involved 658 deaths and 2,629 injuries. Approximately $46 million in property damage also occurred as a result of those crashes.
