IPSWICH — Police Chief Paul Nikas and Fire Chief Paul Parisi report that the Ipswich Police and Fire Departments responded to a two-car crash Thursday on High Street.
Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls around 5:10 p.m. Thursday about a collision near 330 High St. When police and fire crews arrived arrived, they discovered that two vehicles had collided head on: a 2022 Subaru operated by an 83-year-old woman from Maine, with two passengers; and a 2007 Hyundai operated by a 54-year-old man from Rowley, with his 13-year-old child as a passenger.
According to preliminary investigation findings, one vehicle crossed the center line on High Street and struck the other. The Hyundai rolled over, and the Subaru was pinned up against a wall.
The driver of the Subaru and one of her passengers were extricated from the vehicle by Ipswich and Rowley firefighters, using hydraulic rescue tools. Those patients were taken by a medical helicopter to a Boston hospital. They suffered serious injuries.
Three other people were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.
Multiple Ipswich Police and Fire crews were the first at the scene. They were assisted by an off-duty Gloucester Fire Department paramedic who was passing by the scene.
Fire crews from Essex, Georgetown, Hamilton, Newbury, Rowley and Topsfield provided mutual aid. Ambulances from Action Ambulance, and Georgetown and Newbury also were on the scene.
“The police officers, firefighters and paramedics did an awesome job working together,” Chief Nikas said. “Their quick work helped patients get the medical care they needed as soon as possible.”
Said Chief Parisi: “Our firefighters responded along with mutual aid partners, and we’re grateful that we were able to use our experience and training to extract two people from the car and prepare them for transport by helicopter to Boston.”
The crash remains under investigation by the Ipswich Police Department Accident Reconstruction Unit.
